Purpose

Deuteronomy 4:29 NIV: But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.

In my seeking to better understand my purpose, there is one thing I am certain of: my purpose is not to seek my purpose. As many things in the Christian life, God´s purpose for us is revealed to us by "Him" as we seek Him. Seeking one´s purpose is often motivated, at least in part, by a desire to find fulfillment. I may be seeking to understand God´s purpose for me because on some level, it will make me feel better about who I am, or it may fill some void within me. The trouble with spending too much time trying to understand my purpose is that it is too easy for my focus to be more greatly placed on myself, than on Jesus. If I have no purpose but to seek Christ and to follow Him fully, then He defines my purpose moment by moment. As such, I release my need to understand His will for my life, and I simply trust Him with my life. It is then I find my greatest fulfillment is not in understanding who I am, but in learning more about who Jesus is.

Keeping Fit

Romans 12:1 NIV: Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God´s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.

I have the best of intentions to stay physically fit. I sometimes set up schedules with real and reachable goals. I have a weight bench, a treadmill, and a membership to a fitness club. But for some reason, that by itself isn´t enough. I actually have to follow through with my plans and use the resources I have available. And if I don´t, it´s easy to see the results each time I step on the scale or look in the mirror. There may be a lot of drawbacks from not being physically fit, but I can think of nothing as bad as the difficulties I face when I am not spiritually fit. Just like with my body, when I don´t do what is needed for my spirit—it shows—and sometimes it´s not pretty. I cannot overemphasize our need to stay spiritually fit. We must maintain good spiritual condition for the sake of our relationships, our personal walk with God, and our effectiveness as ministers and witnesses.

The Choice is OursJoshua 24:15 NKJV: And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.A day will come when each of us will face the one true Judge. On that day, there will be no appeal to a higher court. Truth will not be relevant or subjective, but based on what is. Nothing will remain hidden that was hidden. All will be laid bare before the Judge, the Lord. And when the final arguments are heard, and those that have chosen to seek to live for themselves and deny Christ are faced with their consequences, there will be a great cry. Some will be broken with sorrow. Some will be speechless. And some will have the audacity to blame God. Augustine said, "A man may lose the good things of this life against his will; but if he loses the eternal blessings, he does so with his own consent." There are so many people who seem to believe their misfortune is the fault of someone or something else--perhaps a parent, or society, or some other life circumstance. But concerning our choice to seek self or seek God, there is no one else to blame. We choose Jesus, or we don´t. The choice is up to each of us.

Waiting
Lamentations 3:25 NKJV: LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.
Abraham and Sarah understood what it meant to wait for the Lord. He had revealed His plans to them to give them a son, and to make Abraham the father of many nations. Abraham and Sarah did what so many of us would do, or have done--they took matters into their own hands. They attempted to work out for themselves the purposes of God in their lives, in their own way, and by their own ti****ble. But, "the Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you…" (2 Peter 3:9). Responding to our circumstances using human reasoning or worldly wisdom is something that often brings more headaches than solutions. God´s plan for us is something He is bringing about in His time, and His way. Our primary responsibility is to seek Him, follow where He leads, trust Him when things don´t make sense to us, and wait for Him as we journey forward.
